Choose Magnum Learn's The Art of Street Photography if you want to hear how famous Magnum photographers think, for $99. Choose Phototactic if you want a step by step method with exercises you go out and shoot, backed by a 60 day money back guarantee, for $297.
I'm Olivier Duong, and Phototactic is my course, which I teach with Don Springer. So read this as a comparison written by one side. I checked every Magnum fact below on Magnum's own pages in September 2026 and link to them, so you can verify it yourself. Neither course reviews your own photos. I say plainly where Magnum is the better buy.

What Magnum Learn's street photography course includes
As of September 2026, Magnum sells The Art of Street Photography for $99. It has ten on-demand video lessons, about three hours in total, with ten instructors: seven Magnum photographers and three industry experts. The photographers are Bruce Gilden, Martin Parr, Susan Meiselas, Richard Kalvar, Carolyn Drake, Peter van Agtmael and Mark Power.
Magnum's page lists what you learn:
- Finding the right mindset
- Framing the unexpected
- Photographing people, from candid shots to street portraits
- Developing your photographic voice
- Editing and sequencing your work
- Watching the tutors shoot, such as Bruce Gilden on the streets of New York and Martin Parr at a county fair
Magnum Photos is the agency co-founded by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa, and that name is a big part of what you pay for. You hear working photographers explain their choices in their own words. For $99 that is a lot of access.

Magnum Learn review: strengths and limits
Where Magnum Learn is strong
- Price. $99 is a third of what Phototactic costs.
- Famous voices. Few courses let you hear Gilden, Parr, Meiselas and Kalvar talk about their own work.
- Range. Seven photographers means seven ways of working. Gilden shoots very close with flash. Mark Power keeps what he calls "a physical and metaphorical distance". Seeing both helps you find your own position.
- Subtitles. The FAQ lists English, French, Italian, Spanish and Simplified Chinese subtitles for this course.
Where it stops
- No contact with the tutors. The FAQ says the course "provides video-on-demand content only" and points you to live workshops if you want to interact.
- Homework is optional. Some lessons and workbooks include assignments, but Magnum calls them extracurricular. You can share results with a hashtag.
- Streaming only. The videos can't be downloaded, though you keep access with no time limit.
- A strict refund window. Refunds are available for 14 days, and only if you haven't started streaming. Once you press play, it's yours.
- Documentary flavour. Magnum describes Carolyn Drake's approach as "lyrical and collaborative" documentary work, and Peter van Agtmael's practice as documenting social justice issues. Useful ideas, but not all of it is pure street photography.
Verdict: Magnum Learn is a good $99 masterclass in attitude. Most of it is about how these photographers think, not a system you practise step by step. That's a fair trade at that price.
What Phototactic includes
Disclosure: this is my course and this site sells it.
Phototactic: Street Photography Secrets is an online street photography course built around one idea: you install picture patterns in your mind so you see images before you raise the camera. It's designed to change your images in as little as 10 days. The eight modules cover:
- How to install picture patterns, with the Eye, Heart and Mind framework
- Intent, the one word behind compelling images
- Composition keys: 5 laws, 6 elements and 8 arrangement principles
- Emotion, so your photos make people feel something
- Priming your mind and removing the "mind viruses" that kill images
- Cheat sheets, including the Image Quest sheet for your phone
- Editing for the "wow" factor
- Fearless street photography, including reframing fear
Every module comes with a cheat sheet and email exercises you can put into practice right away. The six bonuses are a recorded shooting demonstration, a Photography Basics camera course, lessons from Renaissance masters, 18 psychological principles, an Image Vault where you watch 10 winning images critiqued, and a two hour interview with Don about Garry Winogrand and Minor White.

Don Springer has 50 years in photography. He was the protégé of Ding McNulty, a museum curator, and his work is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He also shot with Garry Winogrand. I started as a graphic designer and became a professional photographer. I've written close to 100 articles on photography.
It costs $297, one payment. You can stream it or download the mp4 files. The 60 day money back guarantee applies even after you've watched it: use the material, and if it doesn't work for you, ask for your money back. See the price and guarantee page for the details.
The real difference: inspiration vs a method
Magnum teaches through stories. A Magnum photographer tells you how they found a project and how they edit it. You come away inspired, and you pull your own lessons out of it.
Phototactic teaches through patterns. We break strong street photos into parts you can name and look for: the law of proximity, the law of similarity, mid-point tension, frame dynamics. Then the exercises send you out to find those patterns.
I've written for years that most photography tips are useless. Not because they're wrong, but because nobody puts them into action. I can explain repeated elements all day, and it means nothing until you go out and find them yourself. That's why every Phototactic module ends with an exercise. Magnum does include assignments, but it treats them as optional.
Neither approach is better for everyone. If you already shoot a lot and want perspective, Magnum's stories may be exactly what you need. If you shoot a lot and your photos still look the same, a method is usually what's missing. For a longer answer, read whether a street photography course is worth it.

Feedback: what neither course gives you
Be clear on this before you buy either one. Neither course looks at your photos.
- Magnum Learn: no contact with the tutors in the on-demand course. Magnum runs separate in-person workshops for that. As of September 2026, Richard Kalvar's Paris street photography workshop (9 to 14 November 2026) costs €1,700, with daily group reviews and personal feedback. Travel and hotel are extra.
- Phototactic: nobody critiques student photos, and there is no mentoring or community. The Image Vault bonus shows you 10 winning images critiqued, which trains your eye, but those images are chosen for the course, not submitted by you.
If feedback is the thing you need most, neither online course is the answer. Look at a workshop instead. I compare the options in online course vs street photography workshop.
Without a teacher, you have to critique yourself. Leonardo da Vinci noticed that mistakes are easier to spot in other people's work than in your own. So create distance. Let your photos sit for a month before you judge them, or print them and turn them upside down. You'll see them almost as a stranger would.
Who should choose Magnum Learn
- You want inspiration and mindset from famous photographers, and $99 fits your budget.
- You already have a way of working and want to see how masters think about projects and editing.
- You love documentary work as much as street photography.
- You're happy to stream and don't need a long refund window.
Magnum also sells other $99 courses. As of September 2026, Magnum Learn lists courses by Alec Soth, Bieke Depoorter, Jonas Bendiksen and others, plus a free Get Started in Photography course. If you like the style, there's more.
Who should choose Phototactic
- You've shot for a while and your photos feel ordinary. You can't say why the good ones work.
- You want a step by step method you can repeat on any street, with exercises after each module.
- You want to download the videos and watch them offline.
- You want 60 days to try it and a full refund if it doesn't help.
Not sure yet? Watch the free sample lesson on picture patterns first, or read my Phototactic review, which lists the downsides too. For every other option, from free courses to workshops, see the best street photography courses.
Can you take both?
Yes, and they don't overlap much. Magnum gives you role models and attitude. Phototactic gives you a toolkit of patterns and exercises. A sensible order is Phototactic first, so you have names for what you see, then Magnum's lessons, where you'll spot those patterns in the tutors' photos. Then go out and shoot. Watching great photographers talk is not the same as taking pictures, and neither course changes anything until you do.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Magnum Learn worth it?
For $99, The Art of Street Photography is good value if you want mindset and inspiration from seven Magnum photographers, including Bruce Gilden and Martin Parr. It is about 3 hours of video with optional workbook assignments. There is no contact with the tutors, so it will not critique your photos or give you a structured practice plan.
How much does the Magnum street photography course cost?
As of September 2026, Magnum Learn's The Art of Street Photography costs $99 on magnumphotos.com. Tax may be added at checkout in some countries. Magnum's in-person street photography workshops cost far more, for example €1,700 for Richard Kalvar's six day Paris workshop in November 2026, before travel and hotel.
Can I get a refund from Magnum Learn?
According to the Magnum Learn FAQ, refunds are available for 14 days after purchase, but only if you have not started streaming the course. Once you begin watching, you are no longer eligible. Phototactic, our own course, has a 60 day money back guarantee that applies after you have used the material.
Can I download Magnum Learn videos?
No. The Magnum Learn FAQ says the videos are not downloadable and are viewable online only, though you can rewatch them as often as you like with no time limit. Phototactic lets you stream online or download every video as an mp4 file to watch on any device.
Does either course give feedback on my photos?
No. Magnum Learn's on-demand course is video only and suggests live workshops if you want to interact with tutors. Phototactic has no critique of student photos and no community. Its Image Vault bonus shows 10 winning images critiqued, but not yours. For personal feedback, book a workshop or a portfolio review.
Which is better for beginners, Phototactic or Magnum Learn?
Beginners who want a clear path usually do better with Phototactic, because each short module comes with a cheat sheet and exercises, and a Photography Basics camera course is included as a bonus. Magnum Learn suits beginners who mainly want inspiration and are happy to build their own practice around the lessons.
