The best street photography courses train how you see and make you shoot assignments, not just watch videos. Magnum Learn's The Art of Street Photography ($99) is best for inspiration from famous photographers. trovatten's Street Photography 101 is the best free course. Phototactic, our own course, is best for a step by step method, and a live workshop is best for feedback on your own photos.
I'm Olivier Duong. I teach street photography with Don Springer at Inspired Eye, and one of the courses below is ours. I've marked it clearly. I checked every other course against its provider's page or current listings in September 2026. Where a price moves with sales or I couldn't confirm it, I say so instead of guessing.

Magnum Learn: The Art of Street Photography
Magnum's course costs $99. You get ten on-demand video lessons, about three hours in total. The tutors are Bruce Gilden, Martin Parr, Susan Meiselas, Richard Kalvar, Carolyn Drake, Peter van Agtmael and Mark Power, plus a few industry experts.
It covers mindset, framing, approaching people, finding your voice, and editing and sequencing. You also watch the photographers work on location. Magnum was co-founded by Henri Cartier-Bresson, the photographer behind the idea of the decisive moment, so the art of street photography runs deep in this agency.
Is the Magnum street photography course worth it? Yes, if you want to hear how great photographers think. It is less useful as a step by step method. There are no assignments with feedback, and some lessons are closer to interviews than lessons. Treat it as a masterclass in attitude, then pair it with something that makes you practise.
Phototactic: Street Photography Secrets (our course)
Disclosure: this is my course, sold on this site. Read the rest of this comparison before you decide.
Phototactic is an online street photography course I teach with Don Springer. Don has 50 years of experience and was a protégé of Ding McNulty of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. I started as a graphic designer and became a professional photographer. My work has been featured in Petapixel and the Huffington Post, among others.
The course is built to change your photos in as little as 10 days. Videos run 3 to 5 minutes. Each module comes with a cheat sheet and email assignments, so you shoot, not just watch. The 8 modules cover:
- Picture patterns that show up in strong street photos
- Intent, the one word that changes how you shoot
- Composition keys: 5 laws, 6 elements and 8 arrangement principles
- Emotion, and how to put heart into a frame
- Priming your mind before you go out
- Cheat sheets for fast recall on the street
- Editing for the "wow" factor
- Fearless street photography around strangers
Six bonuses are included: a live shooting demo, a Photography Basics camera course, Renaissance masters secrets, 18 psychological principles, an Image Vault of 10 winning images, and an interview with Don about Garry Winogrand and Minor White.
It costs $297, one payment, with lifetime updates. Stream it or download the mp4 files. A 60 day money back guarantee covers you if it doesn't help.
Where it falls short: there is no live critique from us, and it is not a famous-name brand like Magnum. If you want a person reviewing your photos every week, a live workshop fits better.
Skillshare street photography classes
Skillshare is a subscription. One membership unlocks every class, so you can watch several street photography teachers for one price. Current classes include ones by Craig Whitehead, Polly Rusyn, James Redd, Troy Baird and Trashhand. Pricing changes with promotions and the platform you sign up on, so check the current price on Skillshare.
The upside is variety. The downside is depth: most classes are short, and quality varies from teacher to teacher. Skillshare suits you if you also want to learn editing or design with the same membership.
Udemy street photography courses
Udemy sells courses one at a time, and prices swing hard with its frequent sales. The best-known option is Street Photography Masterclass by Adam Tan, a photography teacher with more than 15 years of teaching behind him.
Wait for a sale and you pay little. The trade-off is that many street photography courses on Udemy are older, and feedback is limited to a Q&A board.
Domestika: Introduction to Street Photography
Gustavo Minas, a Brazilian street photographer known for his work with shadow and light, teaches this course. It has 15 lessons, about two hours in total, and ends with a final project: you photograph one place for at least a week and publish a small photo essay. Domestika runs frequent discounts, so check the current price.
It is a good pick if you love hard light and reflections. He also has a separate Domestika course on street photography at night.
MasterClass street photography: does it exist?
No. MasterClass does not have a dedicated street photography class. Its photography classes include Annie Leibovitz Teaches Photography, which is about portraiture and storytelling, and Jimmy Chin on adventure photography. Both are useful for thinking about stories, but neither teaches street work.
If you search "street photography masterclass", you will mostly find individual courses using the word, such as Adam Tan's Udemy course, not the MasterClass platform.
Free street photography courses
Yes, you can learn street photography for free. Two options stand out:

- trovatten's Street Photography 101. A free course by Danish street photographer Frederik Trovatten. It mixes articles and YouTube videos on composition, camera settings, focusing, street portraits, shyness and night shooting.
- Eric Kim's free materials. Eric Kim publishes his street photography course material openly on his blog, with downloadable guides and slides.
Free courses give you information. What they rarely give you is a plan with assignments you actually finish. If you are starting out, pair a free course with my guide to street photography for beginners and the street photography settings cheat sheet.
Street photography workshops: online or in person?
A workshop gives you the one thing recorded courses can't: feedback on your own photos, in real time.

Live online workshops
Maine Media Workshops runs The Candid Eye with David Castillo. It is live online, 9 hours over 3 sessions, capped at 10 students, for intermediate and advanced photographers. The fee is $395. Santa Fe Workshops also runs an online street photography workshop with Pedro Correa. Check its site for dates and price.
In-person workshops
Santa Fe Workshops has run a five-day street photography workshop in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Eric Kim runs city workshops too. His 2026 New York workshop was listed at $1,500, with an early-bird rate of $599. Add travel and hotel on top. You shoot next to the teacher, which speeds up learning a lot, but it costs the most by far.
Before you shoot strangers abroad or at home, read whether street photography is legal where you are.
How much does a street photography course cost?
- Free: trovatten and Eric Kim's open material.
- Under $100: Magnum Learn at $99, or Udemy and Domestika during a sale.
- $100 to $400: structured programs like our $297 online street photography course, or a live online workshop such as Maine Media's at $395.
- $500 and up: in-person workshops, before travel.
Compare that to gear. A course costs less than most lenses, and it improves every photo you take with the camera you already own.
How to choose the best street photography course for you
- Complete beginner on no budget: start with trovatten, then add structure once you know you love it.
- Want inspiration from legends: Magnum Learn.
- Want a method with assignments: Phototactic, our course, or Domestika's project-based class.
- Want to learn many creative skills: Skillshare.
- Want critique on your photos: a live online or in-person workshop.
Whichever you pick, study the work of the masters alongside it. Candid street photography gets better fastest when you look at great pictures and then go out and shoot. The best course is the one that gets you out shooting this week. Watching lessons without taking pictures does not improve anything.

It depends on what you need. Magnum Learn's The Art of Street Photography ($99) is best for inspiration from famous photographers. trovatten's Street Photography 101 is the best free course. For a structured method with assignments, Phototactic, our own course, is built for that. For critique, pick a live workshop.
Is the Magnum street photography course worth it?
For $99 you get ten video lessons, about three hours, from seven Magnum photographers including Bruce Gilden and Martin Parr. It is worth it for mindset and inspiration. It does not include feedback on your photos or a step by step system, so pair it with regular practice or a structured course.
Is there a free street photography course?
Yes. Frederik Trovatten's Street Photography 101 on trovatten.com is free and covers composition, settings, focusing, street portraits and dealing with shyness through articles and videos. Eric Kim also shares his course material for free on his blog. Free courses give you the information but usually no assignments or feedback.
Should I take an online course or an in-person workshop?
Take an online course first. It is cheaper and you can rewatch lessons at your own pace. An in-person workshop is worth it once you shoot regularly and want direct feedback, because you pay for travel as well as tuition, often $500 to $1,500 before flights and hotel.
Which street photography course is best for beginners?
Beginners do best with short lessons plus assignments. trovatten's free course is a good zero-cost start. If you want structure, Phototactic pairs 3 to 5 minute videos with a cheat sheet and email assignments for every module. It is our own course and has a 60 day money back guarantee.
Does MasterClass have a street photography class?
